Essentials You Need to Get Your Blog Off The Ground

I could truly lose myself researching all the things you supposedly need to start a successful blog or Instagram account.
What do I need to buy?
What do I need to learn?
Does everything have to be perfectly aesthetic and matchy-matchy to “fit my vibe”?
The truth? You need far less than you think.
You don’t need the most high-end camera. You don’t need an expensive website theme. You don’t need a perfectly curated office setup.
What you do need is a good attitude and a genuine desire to build something from scratch.
There were so many moments when I wanted to quit — when I felt uncomfortable on camera, when the tech felt overwhelming, or when the learning curve seemed way too steep. But after a lot of late nights, endless Google searches, and plenty of trial and error, I’ve narrowed it down to what you actually need to get started.
Here’s what’s truly been essential in my blogging and content creation arsenal:
Laptop (and a Case)
Most people already have a laptop at home — and in most cases, it’s more than enough to get started.
You do not need the newest or most expensive model to begin.
If you’re in the market for a new one, I personally chose a MacBook Air because of its portability and strong battery life. Those two features mattered most to me since I’m often working in pockets of time wherever I can.
If you prefer a PC, look for something with at least:
- 16GB of RAM
- 512GB of storage
That combination gives you a good balance of performance, longevity, and cost-effectiveness without overdoing it.
Instagram Handle, Domain, and Email Address
Once you decide you’re doing this — secure your name.
Before you design anything or post anything, check that your Instagram handle is available. You don’t want to build momentum only to realize your ideal name is taken.
At the same time, secure your domain name. Ideally, your Instagram handle and domain match (or are very close). Consistency makes everything easier long-term.
And don’t forget a dedicated email address for your blog or business. It adds credibility from day one and keeps things organized.
Notebook (or Notes App)

I am constantly writing things down.
Nine times out of ten, I’m using the Notes app on my phone. But when I intentionally sit down to plan content, I love having a physical notebook to organize ideas, map out posts, and brain dump freely.
You don’t need anything fancy — just a system that works for you.
Camera
This might surprise you.
Almost every article I read insisted I needed a fancy DSLR with multiple lenses and attachments I didn’t understand.
Here’s my experience:
The best camera is the one you’ll actually use.
Your phone camera is more than capable of producing beautiful photos and high-quality video — especially when you’re just starting. Lighting, angles, and consistency matter far more than expensive equipment.
You can always upgrade later. You don’t need to start there.
Tripod
A tripod is like having an extra set of hands.
It allows you to:
- Film yourself
- Capture steady photos
- Create content without asking someone else to hold the camera
There are endless options out there. I chose this tripod as it’s compatible with my iPhone’s MagSafe back for convenience, but any sturdy, adjustable tripod will do the job.
Backup Battery
If you’re planning to work in small pockets of time (which most of us are), you won’t always be near an outlet.
A reliable portable charger for your phone — and possibly your laptop — is incredibly helpful. There’s nothing worse than finally having the time and motivation to create… and your battery dying.
This little back up battery is my ride or die for charging my phone. I love that the plug and wires are all contained within it. If you are looking for something more robust to power your laptop, I would opt for something like this!
External Hard Drive
This isn’t mandatory on day one, but it’s one of the smartest habits you can build early.
Backing up your photos, videos, and blog content with an external harddrive protects all the work you’re putting in. Accidentally losing months of content would be devastating — and completely avoidable.
Setting up a backup system from the beginning will pay off in the long run.
At the end of the day, you don’t need a perfectly curated setup to start.
You need:
- A willingness to learn
- Patience with yourself
- And the courage to begin before you feel ready
Everything else? You can build along the way. 🤍
